SB 1103 Increasing Common Sense Commercial Tenant Protections, Signed!

SACRAMENTO - Senator Caroline Menjivar (D- San Fernando Valley) and small business advocates are celebrating the signing of Senate Bill 1103 - Commercial Tenant Protection Act of 2024. SB 1103 provides common sense commercial tenant protections for microenterprises with 5 or less employees, restaurants with 10 or less employees, and nonprofits with 20 or less employees.

“California doesn’t just say small businesses are the backbone of our economy, we enact laws that prove how valuable they are to our state! Senate Bill 1103, just signed by Governor Newsom, is specifically tailored to protect the smallest and most vulnerable small businesses and nonprofits. Contracts in 5 additional languages, extended notices for evictions and rent increases, and more transparency around building costs. These common sense measures in SB 1103 will ensure these businesses can continue to serve their neighborhoods and create more stable tenancies that benefit both landlords and tenants. It is an added protection for entrepreneurs who put their passion, sweat, and tears into bringing their American dream to reality.” – Senator Caroline Menjivar, author of SB 1103

Cosponsors of SB 1103 include Bet Tzedek Legal Services, Inclusive Action for the City, Lawyers’ Committee for Civil Rights of the San Francisco Bay Area, Public Counsel, CAMEO, and Small Business Majority.
