Happy July, Senate District 20! Summer Events + Resources

Wishing a Happy, Hydrated, and Healthy Summer to
Burbank & San Fernando Valley!

The California Legislature will be on summer recess from July 14 to August 14. That means more time in the district, speaking with constituents, collaborating with organizations that make important contributions to our communities, and advocating for the services SD 20 needs with our local government agencies. I’ll see you out there!

Legislative Update

2023 California State Budget & Infrastructure Package Signed - Governor Newsom signed the final 2023-24 California Budget and infrastructure legislation. My team and I worked hard to ensure Californians get the necessary programs to protect our vulnerable communities and build a thriving future for all working families.

I’m grateful to my colleagues and the Governor for including one of my priorities, the CalFresh Minimum Nutrition Benefit Pilot Program. This is a critical step toward a permanent, statewide increase of the minimum monthly food benefit from $23 to $50, the goal of my bill, SB 600. This was also my first year chairing Budget Subcommittee 3 on Health and Human Services, and despite the deficit, we were able to improve funding for vital programs; CalWORKS, health care workforce, child care, Medi-Cal, and Covered CA.

In the Community

San Fernando Valley Pride - Our first district event was a HIT! The Valley came out and made the San Fernando Valley Pride March & Block Party a huge success. Together, we built a foundation that will promote visibility and inclusion of the LGBTQ+ community in our district, not just in June, but 365 days a year. Enjoy the recap HERE!

Fourth of July - Senate District 20 went all out to celebrate our nation’s Independence Day! This holiday reminds us of the hard-won freedoms we enjoy and the ones we will keep fighting to secure for every Californian. Over 4th of July weekend, I joined the City of San Fernando’s Block Party and Councilwoman Monica Rodriguez’s We Are One LA Drone Light Show at Hansen Dam.

On July 4th, our communities came together for Sunland-Tujunga the Beautiful and Valley Village parades.

James supported the Burbank Community Health & Wellness Day at ACF Burbank Beshir Mardirossian Youth Center and, while he was there, got a quick check up. He's in tip-top shape to serve the district!

Andrés joined Comisión Femenil during their Scholarship Brunch. Each year, scholarships are awarded to high-achieving Latina high school students in the San Fernando Valley who will be continuing their path through higher education.

Jasmin attended the Reseda Theater Senior Housing ribbon cutting. This project provides 26 accessible and affordable housing units, half of which are designated for seniors facing chronic homelessness. June was also Jasmin’s first month as a district representative after her promotion!
