Governor Signs SB 1323 - Incompetent to Stand Trial Reform

SACRAMENTO - Senator Caroline Menjivar (D- San Fernando Valley) made the following statement after Governor Newsom signed SB 1323 - Incompetent to Stand Trial Reform.

“With Senate Bill 1323, we are modernizing the role of the courts in our Incompetent to Stand Trial process, and streamlining systems that Californians with the most serious mental illnesses encounter. I authored SB 1323 based on expert recommendations by the Committee on Revision of the Penal Code to expedite treatment-based solutions.

Thank you to my colleagues and Governor Newsom, for standing with our judges who now have the tools to assign long-term care for the people that competency restoration will be ineffective to help.”
