Back-to-School & CA Legislature Reconvenes–SD20 August News

Welcome, Burbank & San Fernando Valley Friends!

LAUSD students aren’t the only ones who went back to school on August 14. I went back to school “session” during the reconvening of the California Legislature!

As our children meet their new teachers, let’s exemplify gratitude for the faculty and staff that will nurture, inspire, and care for them every day during this upcoming school year.

Legislative Update

Delivering on my commitment to uplift our communities, in my first year our office secured over $9.5 million in the 2023-24 California State Budget for projects in Senate District 20. This investment will provide critical funding for interim housing, clean water, food and supportive services provided by local organizations, and equestrian recreation.

I’m working towards a thriving future for Burbank, San Fernando Valley, and all Californians. Twelve of the bills I introduced, to fulfill this objective, continue to make their way through the Assembly, and 10 are in Assembly Appropriations. Find bill updates, and submit a Position Letter to show support for the legislation you want to become law.

In the Community

Makenna attended Beginnings Baby Shower & Orientation, a special event for Valley Community Healthcare patients in their third trimester. OB/GYN and pediatric clinicians spoke on the importance of regular checkups for new babies, and staff offered resources for families.

The Burbank Historical Society is a group of individuals determined to preserve the rich history of their community. At their 50th Anniversary & Member Appreciation BBQ, James presented President Don Baldaseroni with a resolution from my office.

#PopsiclesforProtestors to help WGA West and SAG-AFTRA members keep cool as they picket outside of Disney and Warner Bros. I steadfastly support their fight for a fair contract and increased job security.

My team and I are working our way across the district, but we need your help ensuring we cover every corner. Are you part of an organization? Do you have a community event coming up in your neighborhood? Is there a Neighborhood Watch on your block? We want to join if you’ll have us! Send us an invitation

With intense heat forecasted to continue for several more weeks, why not enjoy one of our aquatic recreational centers? Water aerobics at San Fernando Pool, the pool or the lake at Hansen Dam in Lake View Terrace, and the splash pad at Burbank Water Park are a few great options for cooling-off while enjoying the outdoors!

Con el intenso calor pronosticado que continuará durante varias semanas más, ¿por qué no disfrutar de uno de nuestros centros recreativos acuáticos? Senate District 20 Little Known Fact:

Pacoima Elementary School is not just your average century-old institution. This historical treasure dates back much further than initially believed and is a story of resilience and recovery. The original school was opened way back in 1888, but flooding destroyed the building. Reestablished in 1905, and separated from LAUSD in 2003, PCS serves the community as an independent charter.

Thank you for reading the Senate District 20 August Newsletter!

May you and your families be well,

Senator Caroline Menjivar, MSW
