Senator Leyva Responds to Governor Newsom’s State of the State Address

SACRAMENTO – Senator Connie M. Leyva (D-Chino) released the statement below in response to Governor Gavin Newsom’s State of the State address earlier this evening:

“As Chair of both the Senate Education Committee and the Senate Democratic Caucus, I thank Governor Newsom for his continued focus and commitment to ensuring that California’s economic recovery is real for all families.  Also, as the Governor noted during his remarks, California embraces diversity, leads the way on reproductive freedom and advances toward a cleaner environmental future.  Clearly, these priorities set California apart from other states that seek to turn back the clock on progress and equity.”

“I also appreciate that the Governor highlighted transitional kindergarten during his State of the State Address.  I remain committed to working with his Administration—as well as other legislators and stakeholders—so that we may offer more flexibility and practical options for working families with children who are unable to access those services because of their own work or other responsibilities.  For precisely this reason, I introduced SB 976 earlier this year, which will help parents access schooling and care options for their young children, while also helping to protect the stability of jobs for teachers at community-based providers, which employ primarily women of color.  In short, parents should have the option to send their children to a public elementary school provider or a community-based childcare provider to benefit from universal preschool.”
