AB 398 and AB 617 Approved by State Senate Today

SACRAMENTO – Senator Connie M. Leyva (D-Chino) issued the following statement after the California State Senate passed cap-and-trade legislation—AB 398 and AB 617—on the Senate Floor earlier today:

“As a State Senator, I have consistently fought to protect the environment and advance environmental justice priorities in California and across the Inland Empire, while striving to ensure economic and job growth across our state.  To that end, I reviewed the proposed cap-and-trade legislation that would extend California’s landmark cap-and-trade program to cut harmful greenhouse gas emissions and decided to support it today.  AB 398 and AB 617 are together a good compromise package that will fight climate change while also protecting communities highly impacted by poor air quality—many of which I have the honor of representing in the Inland Empire.  All Californians deserve to breathe clean air, including residents of communities with congested traffic and the resulting air pollution.  Today’s vote is a step in the right direction and I look forward to continue working with community residents, as well as Governor Brown, legislative leaders, other state legislators and industry stakeholders to protect California’s well-earned position as an environmental and clean air leader.”
