During the 2015-2016 legislative session, Governor Brown signed 11 bills that I authored, including legislation to eliminate the statute of limitations on rape, permanentely extend overtime for domestic workers, require review of environmental justice impacts on local communities, protect communities from lead pipe dangers, improve career technical education, among others.
On Saturday, March 18, 2017, Senator Leyva--in partnership with the Mexican Consulate, the Guatemalan Consulate, the Inland Empire Latino Lawyers Association, and the Pomona Economic Opportunity Center--hosted a Citizenship Fair in Rialto. The event was able to assist approximately 40 residents apply for their United States citizenship. Participants were provided with document preparation and legal review, and packets were prepared to be mailed out free of charge.
Leading up to the Citizenship Fair, the Senator hosted three volunteer training sessions where approximately 45 volunteers were trained in filling out the application for citizenship and fee waiver request. The fair was a great success and Senator Leyva plans to host additional similar events in the future.
